The best Twitter tools for developers (2026)

Full disclosure: I make LinkIntel, so I'm biased. For developers the deciding factor is access: does the tool have an API, an MCP server or something a command line agent can use, and does it let you post technical content beyond X, to Bluesky or Mastodon.

The answer is mixed. Typefully leads on cross-posting and a free tier with an API, OpenTweet has the biggest MCP server, X's own API is the source of everything else, and LinkIntel is a narrow read-only tool that fits one job. I say which for which.

TL;DR

Cross-post technical posts for free: Typefully. A big MCP server for agents: OpenTweet. Build on X directly and pay per call: X's own API and MCP. Give a coding agent your own X results, read-only: LinkIntel.

  • Best for cross-posting to Bluesky and Mastodon, with an API on the free plan: Typefully
  • Best for an agent-ready MCP server and API keys: OpenTweet
  • Best for a GraphQL API on a free plan: Buffer
  • Best for building on X directly with your own app: X's official API and MCP
  • Best for a read-only MCP of your own X results for a coding agent: LinkIntelmine

Three jobs developers mean by tools

Building on X is one job: you want the API. Letting an agent do the posting is another, which is MCP or a command line tool. Posting technical content to the networks developers actually read is the third, and that is cross-posting. Few tools do all three, so decide which you are doing before you compare prices.

Typefully lists Bluesky and Mastodon as well as X. OpenTweet lists X, Bluesky and LinkedIn. For Buffer I could not confirm networks beyond X from the pages I read.

CLI and agent access

Command line access varies. X ships an open-source xurl mcp bridge for its MCP. Typefully points coding agents such as Claude Code and Cursor to its Agent Skills instead of MCP. OpenTweet has an open-source npm package for its MCP server and lists Claude Code, Cursor and Windsurf among compatible clients. LinkIntel adds with one command in Claude Code.

If you want to understand the protocol first, read what an MCP server for X post analytics is. For comparing servers by job, see the Claude MCP guide.

1. Typefully

Best for
Cross-posting technical posts, with an API on the free plan
Price
Free; Creator $99 a year (annual billing only)
API and MCP access
API, MCP and Agent Skills; Free card lists "Agents, API, MCP"

The Free plan card lists "Agents, API, MCP", and the integrations list adds AI Agent Skills, Claude, ChatGPT, Notion, Slack, Raycast and Zapier. Its MCP server uses OAuth, with a bearer API key for headless clients, and can create, edit and schedule drafts across X, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon, including threads. Business raises API rate limits.

The catch: the pricing page describes no limits for the free API, and Free allows 10 posts a month. Its MCP article says it needs a Claude Pro or Max plan and does not mention analytics.

2. OpenTweet

Best for
An agent-ready MCP server and API keys
Price
Pro $19.99, Advanced $29, Agency $49 a month; 7-day free trial
API and MCP access
43-tool MCP, API keys on every plan

OpenTweet's MCP server is hosted over streamable HTTP with a bearer API key, and there is an open-source npm package. Its 43 tools cover posting, articles, evergreen queues, media, analytics, discovery, accounts and DM campaigns. Pro includes 3 API keys, Advanced 10 and Agency 25. You do not need an X developer account, and it lists Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf and GitHub Copilot among compatible clients.

The catch: there is no free plan, only a 7-day trial that limits link posts to 5. A server that can do this much can also do a lot to your account, so scope your agent's permissions.

3. Buffer

Best for
A GraphQL API on a free plan
Price
Free; Essentials $5 per channel a month billed yearly ($6 monthly)
API and MCP access
GraphQL API and MCP; Free: 1 key, 3,000 requests a month

Buffer's API is GraphQL at api.buffer.com. Free includes 1 API key and 3,000 requests a month, Essentials 3 keys and 7,500, and Team 5 keys and 15,000. Its MCP server uses an API key as a bearer token, and it documents Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, n8n, Zapier and others. Post metrics need a personal key with the insightsRead scope.

The catch: app clients cannot read metrics, MCP requests count against your plan's limit and metrics refresh once a day. On Twitter its MCP create_post is text only and takes a thread through metadata.

4. X's official API and MCP

Best for
Building on X directly with your own app
Price
Pay per use: post reads $0.005, your own reads $0.001, post create $0.015
API and MCP access
API, hosted MCP and docs MCP; your own developer app

X's API has no subscriptions, only pay-per-usage credits bought in the Developer Console. Posts read at $0.005 each, user reads at $0.010, your own posts and mentions at $0.001 per resource, and a post create at $0.015 per request, or $0.200 if it contains a URL. New users get $20 in credits on saving a first eligible card. It also has a hosted MCP at api.x.com/mcp and a Docs MCP at docs.x.com/mcp that searches and reads its API documentation.

The catch: setup is yours. OAuth needs your own developer app, with no dynamic client registration, and writes need the xurl mcp bridge and Node.js. The MCP docs list no scheduling, and mention no ranking weights or references.

5. LinkIntelmine

Best for
A read-only MCP of your own X results for a coding agent
Price
$39 USD a month, no free trial, 7-day refund
API and MCP access
Remote MCP with OAuth 2.1, read-only

LinkIntel is a remote MCP at https://www.getlinkintel.com/api/mcp. In Claude Code, claude mcp add -s user --transport http linkintel https://www.getlinkintel.com/api/mcp adds it, OAuth 2.1 handles sign-in, and clients without OAuth use a bearer token from /setup. It returns your own recent original posts and metrics (read daily), X's ranking weights with commit links, and references you chose. The weights are also free at /x-algorithm as markdown, JSON and an RSS feed.

The catch: it is read-only by design, so an agent cannot post or schedule with it, and it is built around one person's own X account. It is not a posting API. Buffer's and OpenTweet's MCP servers also expose your own metrics, so the extra here is the weights and references.

Try LinkIntel

My pick

  • You post technical content to X, Bluesky and Mastodon: Typefully, with its free API.
  • You want an agent to schedule and run an X account: OpenTweet's MCP, with scoped permissions.
  • You want a plain GraphQL API on a free plan: Buffer.
  • You are building a product on X: X's own API, and watch the per-call costs.
  • Your coding agent should know what worked for you: LinkIntel, read-only.

What I'd do today

  1. Decide whether you are building on X, automating posts, or just posting technical content.
  2. For posting, create a free Typefully account and generate an API key.
  3. For building, set up an X developer app, put in a small amount of credit and watch the per-call costs.
  4. If you use Claude Code, connect LinkIntel and ask it which of your posts did best before it drafts the next one.

Questions

Is the X API free?
It is pay-per-usage, with no subscriptions. Posts read at $0.005 each and creating a post costs $0.015, or $0.200 if it contains a URL. X lists $20 in free credits for saving a first eligible payment card.
Can I post to Bluesky and Mastodon with the same tool?
Typefully lists Bluesky and Mastodon alongside X, LinkedIn, Threads and Substack. OpenTweet lists X, Bluesky and LinkedIn. Check the current plan pages for yours.
Which of these have an MCP server?
Typefully, Buffer, OpenTweet, X and LinkIntel. I found none for Tweet Hunter or Fedica. Only LinkIntel's is read-only by design.
Can Claude Code use these?
LinkIntel adds with one claude mcp add command. OpenTweet lists Claude Code as a compatible client. Typefully points coding agents to its Agent Skills instead of MCP.
Can LinkIntel post from my command line?
No. It cannot post, schedule, reply or DM. Use a tool above for posting and LinkIntel for evidence.

LinkIntel is $39 USD a month, with no free trial and a full refund within 7 days of your first payment. It reads your X results and never publishes.
