Counting rules
Twitter character limit: how X counts
A post is limited by weight, not by how many characters you typed.
| What you type | Counts as |
|---|---|
| Letters, digits, punctuation and spaces | 1 each |
| A link | 23, however long it is |
| An emoji | 2, however many parts it has |
| Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters | 2 each |
| Other Unicode characters | 2 each by default |
| Hashtags | Normally: the # plus the tag text |
| An @mention you type | Normally |
| The @mentions X fills in at the start of a reply | 0 |
| Attached media | 0 |
That works out to 280 plain characters, or 140 emoji or Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters. The rules are from X’s counting characters documentation, and this counter uses X’s open-source twitter-text library to apply them.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
- How many characters are in a tweet?
- A post on X can contain up to 280 characters. X counts by weight rather than raw length: most characters count as 1, emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2, and every link counts as 23.
- Do spaces and emoji count?
- Yes to both. A space counts as 1, like a letter or punctuation mark. Every emoji counts as 2, including skin-toned and family emoji built from several parts, so a post made only of emoji fits 140.
- Do links count toward the limit?
- Yes. X shortens every link and counts it as 23 characters, whether the original is short or very long. Two links use 46 of your 280.
- Do @mentions count?
- An @mention you type counts like any other text. In a reply, the @mentions X fills in at the start don't count. This counter can't tell which mentions X added, so when you draft a reply here, leave the filled-in ones out. Hashtags count normally.
- Is the limit different with X Premium?
- Yes. X's Premium help page says longer posts let subscribers post up to 25,000 characters, in a post, a quote or a reply. It comes with every Premium tier: Basic, Premium and Premium+. Choose Premium above the box and this counter measures against 25,000 instead of 280.
- Is this counter free and private?
- Yes. It is free and needs no account. The text you type is counted in your browser, is not sent to LinkIntel and is not saved, so closing the tab clears it.
